Silent Hill: Homecoming - Now appropriate for Aussies
Way back in September, it was announced that Konami's Silent Hill: Homecoming would not be arriving on Australian shores, thanks to some pretty violent scenes that were outlined in the official report from the Classification Board.

Well, today, we have a new Classification Board report for you, explaining a new decision - a revised edition of Silent Hill: Homecoming has been given an MA15+ rating, with the consumer advice of strong horror violence and themes.

DEFCON developers seek AI killing machine from academics
The developers of DEFCON are currently seeking submissions from academics and the average Joe alike in a bid to develop a fearsome AI for their game that can be crowned the "most efficient killing machine". DEFCON, with its cheerful tag line of "Everybody Dies", is an end of the world simulator developed by Introversion Software, in which full scale nuclear war and the populations of the world perishing are both regular occurrences.

Given the fact that DEFCON is inspired by the film Wargames, in which a computer AI teeters on the brink of unleashing a nuclear arsenal upon humanity, this concept of an "unbeatable AI" could be considered both a terrifying and enchanting prospect. The AI project is a partnership between The Imperial College Department of Computing and the developers of the game, Introversion Software.

Rock Band gets a visit from the Big O, with a six-song track pack
Yesterday, I heard that more people wanted "older music" from their video games. Apparently, Harmonix heard you too, today releasing the Roy Orbison Pack 01 for Rock Band.

Featuring six tracks from the Big O, you'll be able to croon along with You Got It, Mean Woman Blues, Claudette, Ooby Dooby, In Dreams and of course, Oh, Pretty Woman.

Free Radical Design for sale, "strong interest" may save jobs
Last month, we reported that Haze developer, UK based Free Radical Design had entered administration, after employees had arrived at work to find the doors locked and instructions to meet at a local hotel to discuss the company's future.

Today, a news source seems to indicate on good authority that there is "very strong" interest from certain parties that could lead to a potential sale of the company and its assets to another player in the business market, meaning that the continued operation of Free Radical Design in the future may be likely.

Now Playing (06/01/09) - Looking into '09
Last week we checked out some of the best trailers from 2008 but it seems the developers need just a little bit more time to get some new stuff out. So this week we will be looking at some of the best clips for games coming out this year! These videos were made to hype you up and it might have been just a little while since you have seen them. Check them out to understand why 2009 is going to be an excellent year of gaming.

Starting off this week is a high flying fighter. Then we are going back to the origin of a project, as well as hitting the streets for a fight. There is something evil around there and it might just be because of the hammer of war. But luckily we have a commando to swing into action to save us.

Far Cry 2 (Xbox 360 Review)
While I know there was a lot of stigma attached to Far Cry 2, it did seem to pop up on an awful lot of "Best Of" lists, late last year. Whether it was that gamers had low expectations that were well-met, or whether it was actually a decent title is probably still a matter of personal opinion, but it's fair to say that those people who wrote it off without a second glance seem to be missing out on something a bit special.

Matt Keller strode into Africa, right into the heart of Far Cry 2, with no Jack Carver in sight. He wrote this review, so if you haven't ventured over, now's your chance to catch up.

We've got four new videos to show off how the game's made the jump from WiiWare to Apple's handheld, and some more details on just how many awards this little title's been nominated for.

Guitar Hero: World Tour comes Down Under in January
Australia Day means many things to many people, but this year, something special has been added - a special Australian Track Pack for Guitar Hero World Tour. Featuring three of Australia's most successful rock acts, the trio of tunes will be available for download from January 22nd, 2009 for Xbox 360, and February 9th for PS3 and Wii (looks like you'll need to delay those parties!).

Now, before I tell you what bands are involved, I'd like you to think, and perhaps comment, on which songs you'd like to be included - and then check out who made the cut. I know I was surprised.

Space-simulating MMO EVE Online has heralded in the new year by claiming a major milestone - more than 45,000 players online, playing the game at the same time.

The Sims 3 - some scintillating system specs
I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a big call. 2009 will be the year of system spec announcements. There, I said it.

All real news will be replaced by statements about what sort of hardware is required to run the latest games, like this one - The Sims 3, which has today released the details on just what you'll need to play with the little people on either your desktop or your laptop.

I've thrown in a fact sheet, and I'd like to say that more news will be forthcoming, but as this year is going to be dominated by system specs, who knows, this might just be it.

Xbox 360: The Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008
The end of the year is typically the time for roundups and recaps, summing up the year past - but sometimes, it takes a little while longer to compile all the information, bumping the news to the new year. This is the case with the official Xbox 360 Top 20 LIVE Games of 2008 list, which has just been announced.

We have here the list of both the the Original Xbox and Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (both lists based on unique users), as well as the Top Arcade Titles (based on full versions purchased). Not sure if there's any real surprises here (hello, Halo), but it is interesting to note the number of demos in the list that are not accompanied by the full game.

Tom Clancy's EndWar (PS3 Review)
I know that while we were away, you missed me, and you missed my bad puns... well, to welcome 2009 in the spirit in which I wish to continue, I have a good one for you.

Late 2008 saw the release of the latest Tom Clancy game, a voice-activated console-only RTS that was always going to cause some differences of opinion. Everybody agreed on one thing though, it was different. Matt Keller dusted off his PS3 and pulled on his headset to say a few words on the game, in his first published review of this calendar...

...that's right, to StartYear, we're looking at EndWar. Har-dee-har!

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop = Zombie Rock!
While 2006's Dead Rising was relatively well-received (you're a journalist trapped in a shopping mall that is infested with zombies - what's not to love?), the upcoming Wii port, Chop Till You Drop, has been gathering some less-than-stellar reviews.

That was before this new trailer arrived on the scene. Featuring Japanese band GaGaGa SP, motion-captured and zombified, this will have you dancing around chanting DEDO LAISIIN! with the best of them - and suddenly caring a lot less about graphics quality, and how many zombies can fit on screen at one time.

Monday Screens! (5/01/2009)
While I'd like to start the year with a feeling of abundance, with a whole pile of beautiful screens and images to celebrate the coming of 2009... everybody's been on holidays, so it's pretty slim pickins here this week, I'm afraid!

People should be back to work this week, I hope, so next week we should have a better haul. Still, there are a few games here I'd like to know more about... and, if nothing else, it gives us a great starting point for things to get better!

Lord of the Rings: Conquest - Some not-too-challenging PC specs
Can you believe it? It's been five years since Boxing Day heralded the last update in the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films. If you've been hanging out for more of the same, Pandemic are out to help, with the impending release of Lord of the Rings: Conquest.

It's been a while since we've heard about this one - an "action-packed" title that's taken from the same pattern as Star Wars Battlefront, asking the question "What if Frodo failed to destroy the One Ring?". Quietness aside, we're promised that work is still trundling along nicely - and we have the PC system requirements for you, in case you were pondering some post-holiday upgrades.

Weekly Digest - 05/01/09
Each week, we collate the most popular stories that we published over the past seven days, plus a lineup of the most downloaded files added in the same timeframe. That way, in case you missed something, you can catch up in one helpful little spot, every Monday morning.

Yes, things have been a bit quiet over here for the past week or so, but it's back to whatever passes as 'normal' this week, our regular diet of news, reviews and letting you know what's going on in the games world.

Number 3 was another review, this one difficult to resist. We handed out some awards, a bit of WAAAGH!, and looked back at the year that was 2008 in gaming.
